From an early age, I was drawn to imagination—creating maps of fictional countries, stories, vehicles, and tools. Through these explorations, my interest expanded beyond individual objects to include people, artifacts, and the worlds they shape.
After earning a master’s degree in Industrial Design from Chiba University, I began my career at a consumer electronics manufacturer before joining DENSO. In my early years, I led vehicle HMI design across both mass-production and concept projects, focusing on the integration of digital interfaces and physical products. What began as an overseas training opportunity evolved into more than a decade of international assignments.
At DENSO’s North American headquarters near Detroit, I founded and led the local design organization. Beginning with vehicle HMI and UX development, I grew the team’s scope in step with the automotive industry’s transformation, contributing to the planning, branding, and strategic direction of emerging technologies such as autonomous driving and connected systems. Later in Silicon Valley, I initiated collaborative research with local universities and explored new ways for design and UX to contribute to R&D. I returned to Japan in 2026.
In an increasingly complex and divided world, I hope to contribute—through design—to moving it, even slightly, in a more positive direction.hiroki_matsui
